Day 1: Mangaweka to Apiti

Before you begin, be sure to check out Mangaweka's iconic Main Street. This is a main road frozen in time, you'll feel like you've been transported to the early 1900's.

Follow the road over Mangaweka Bridge, through a deep viaduct steeped with white papa cliffs. Ruahine Dress Circle Reserve, a local hot spot with waterfalls and swimming holes, makes a good rest stop. If you’re ready to stretch your legs, the Rangiwahia Hut Track(opens in new window) is a must-do when in Manawatu. Alternatively, Table Flat Trekking offer horse treks that range from 45 minutes to 3 hours.

Finish your day with a drink and meal at the Apiti Tavern & Eatery, the perfect place to meet the locals.

Day 2: Apiti to Ashhurst

Heading through the picturesque Pohangina Valley, you’ll be treated to an ever-changing landscape of lush green valleys, stony river terraces and the impressive backdrop of the Ruahine Ranges. Along the way, there are hidden swimming holes and scenic lookouts to explore. Totara Reserve is a popular picnics and swimming spot as is nearby Raumai Reserve.

For a quick detour, head up to Pohangina Village, and visit Cartwheel Creamery, before stopping into Pohangina Wetlands, or Luttrells White Pine Gardens & Museum. From here, it is a short journey to the Manawatu Gorge entrance, where you will discover walking trails, swimming, jet boating, rafting, horse trekking and much more.
