The water at Waikanae Beach (Roberts Road) is shallow and there are often small waves, which makes this an excellent beach for beginners.
This Northern Part of Makorori (Makorori Northerns) is a family friendly area and when the north-east sea breeze arrives it makes for balmy, picinic friendly weather. The swells are small so this is ideal for beginners and kids.
Confident on the board but not yet an expert?
Midway Pipe is good for somewhat experiences surfers. In the middle of Poverty Bay and with views of Young Nicks Head. Midway Pipe is said to have some of the best surfing all year round.
Makorori Beach seems untouched and remote. Park the campervan there overnight and surf as the sunrise emerges over the horizon. Seals may join you in the waves during the winter months.
Super confident on the board and looking for a challenging surf?
Go to Wainui Beach to experience great barrels and hollows. The waves come in fast and powerful here, so take care. You'll need to be an experienced surfer as it can be a tough paddle when the waves are big and this beach holds a lot of power compared to other breaks.
Blacks Beach on the Mahia Peninsula delivers super consistent right hand reef breaks onto a stunning black sand beach. Waves crank here at least twice a week and best at low tide in a southerly swell. Just keep a watch out for the shallow reefs here.
The Island is Gisborne's best kept secret and is only suitable for advanced surfers. It could take between 15-30 minutes to paddle to The Island on a shortboard, depending on weather conditions and your fitness level. The Island is a great spot to meet local surfers.
