One man’s cheese dream has become reality at C’est Cheese on the main street of Featherston, the little town that greets and farewells travellers to the Wairarapa, on State Highway 2 north of the capital city Wellington.
Paul Broughton opened his shop and deli selling dozens of different New Zealand cheeses in 2013.
The store resembles those found in Europe. There is also a comprehensive range of cured meats, olive oils, chutneys, relishes, breads and crackers.
Paul, a commercial property professional, trained at the New Zealand Cheese School and had been making his own cheese for four years before opening C’est Cheese.
During New Zealand Cheese Month, he helped create cheese-based degustation menus and invited guests to special tastings.
The little shop is perfect for stocking up on tasty delights before heading back to Wellington city, either by car or train, perhaps to complement wine purchased from Wairarapa vineyards.
The shop is also a popular spot for those attempting the 115km Rimutaka Cycle Trail between Featherston and Upper Hutt, over the Rimutaka mountain range. It is one of New Zealand’s Great Rides.
Stopping at the top to nibble on wedges of cheese sounds sooo European and yet is now so very Kiwi! Try it for yourself – it’ll be grate.
