Standing pretty in pink, on the edge on the ocean's edge, Fyffe House is the only survivor of Kaikoura's once-busy Whaiopuka whaling station and is the town's oldest surviving building.
Exploring Fyffe House shows just how harsh family life was during Kaikoura's early settlement, and how resourceful its citizens needed to be. Such stories are recounted through collected artefacts, dioramas and audio tales, and the whalebones that form the buildings foundations.
The grounds offer fabulous views of the coastline, snow-capped mountains and the vast ocean. A striking carving, Pou Tangaroa, recounts stories relating to the area's Maori history.
Fyffe House is a gentle 45 minute walk around the bay from the township of Kaikoura.
