Franz Josef Glacier - Top Voted things to do

A small place that packs a LOT of punch. The Franz Josef township is named after the impressive Franz Josef Glacier – in Maori named Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere ('The tears of Hinehukatere’).

There is plenty to do in Franz – of course the Glacier is a massive highlight, it is accessed with Glacier Guiding companies. You could also take the scenic flight option over the glacier to get some height fast and see incredible scenery.

When its raining  and you are not able to go up the glacier, there is still plenty to do around town. There are several fantastic free walks to do – that even in the worst weather still present a good time.

Some of the highlights include: the Franz Josef Terminal face walk, Roberts Point, the glow worms in Tartare Tunnels and Alex’s Knob is worth ascending - great views.....

There are some great beaches to explore  and camp at in the area including Gillespies Beach and Okarito – amazing sunsets and general good times.

There are plenty of other activities to enjoy including rafting and kayaking , Horse trekking, 4WD adventures, Skydiving and some wildlife adventures.
