Dunedin is a fantastic city for cycling, offering a compact layout, great mountain biking tracks and great views from the peaks.
Blessed with ample terrain for both on and off-road cycling, there are plenty of routes to explore in and around the city and a number of local operators provide tours and bike hire.
There are stretches of off-road cycle trail alongside both the West Harbour and the Otago Peninsula for shorter scenic rides and cycle lanes running through the central city. Otago Peninsula has twice been named one of the top ten rides in the world by Lonely Planet guide.
A mountain bikers’ paradise, single track off-road trails can be found in every direction. Head to Signal Hill and Redwoods Wakari Creek for world-class downhill mountain biking tracks, or the Swampy Summit Circuit for an excellent longer ride. During the year, there are a number of Mountain Biking events including the Three Peaks Enduro.
The Original Great Ride, the Otago Central Rail Trail starts nearby in Middlemarch and can be enjoyed as a day ride or multi-day cycle journey all the way to Clyde township in Central Otago.
