The most popular walk in the reserve is the Southern Enclosure is family-friendly and will appeal to all ages. Follow 5km of track as it winds through New Zealand forest and past kaka and weta nest boxes.

You’ll also see an aviary used to house new arrivals and birds in transit. Signs with information are scattered along the track so you can find out more about the sights.

Alternative routes

  • The nearby Tautari track passes through a wetland valley which surrounds a lake.
  • Guided tours are available for the Sanctuary Mountain track and nearby tracks and experiences.

Getting there

The Maungatautari Ecological Island Reserve is close to Hamilton, Cambridge and Te Awamutu. To reach the visitor centre and Southern Enclosure, travel to Tari Road, Pukeatua. If you’re travelling with a GPS, enter: 99 Tari Road, Pukeatua.
