Macetown near Arrowtown is a restored mining ghost village set deep in the rugged hills of the Southern Lakes. A wide and easy, scenic trail.
Famous for its historic beauty, Arrowtown is a cosy settlement of many stone buildings overlooking the Arrow River. It is on the route of the 100 km Queenstown Trail, a relatively easy experience that is ideal for recreational cyclists. Mountain bike enthusiasts will prefer the challenge of the Macetown Track, which disappears into remote hills, filled with the boom and bust memories of pioneer gold miners.
From Arrowtown, the track heads north up the Arrow River and passes Mt Soho Homestead, and many derelict huts en route to Macetown. Most of the route is an old horse and dray track, so it is wide, but there are many fords to cross – perfect on a hot summer’s day. There is a beautiful picnic area at Macetown, with interesting interpretation panels. Best to oil your chain before the downhill journey back to Arrowtown. Find out more on the trail website.
