SIDE STORY

The Tui
On of the delights of walking in the New Zealand bush, in addition to admiring the lush vegetation, is hearing the beautiful song of the tui. This black-billed bird with dark plumage, has a white feather 'collar' around its neck, explaining its other name of 'Parson Bird'.

Tui can be found in most bush and forests, and may even venture into suburban gardens. They like to feed on nectar from flowering native kowhai and pohutukawa trees and also eat berries and insects. Maori greatly prized tui, hunting them for food and using their feathers for cloaks.
