Courses run July to September from Wānaka. ASC1: 1 evening + 1 day, $350/person. ASC1 Ski Touring Combo: 1 evening + 2 days, $600/person. ASC2: 4 days, $1,200/person. Min 4 students, max 1:6 instructor ratio. No prior training needed for ASC1. ASC2 requires ASC1 (or equivalent) plus one season of backcountry experience. Field sessions in real backcountry terrain - venues chosen based on conditions. If weather prevents field work, sessions may be rescheduled.
20% non-refundable deposit to confirm. Trips under $1,000: full payment at booking. Over $1,000: balance due 60 days before start. Bookings within 60 days: full payment upfront. Refunds: 60+ days before: full refund less deposit 30–59 days: 50% refund Under 30 days: no refund No refund once the trip has begun, including for fitness, injury, illness or unforeseen events. Rescheduling considered case by case. Trip cancellation insurance strongly recommended.
Peak Experience delivers Mountain Safety Council (MSC) avalanche courses from Wānaka, taught by IFMGA and NZMGA-certified mountain guides who assess avalanche conditions professionally every winter. ASC1 (1.5 days) - foundational avalanche safety covering terrain recognition, the New Zealand Avalanche Advisory, trip planning, safe travel techniques & companion rescue. No prior training needed. Also available as a Ski Touring Combo with an extra guided backcountry day. ASC2 (4 days) - advanced training in snowpack analysis, snow profiles, complex terrain management and decision-making frameworks. Requires ASC1 and at least one season of backcountry experience. Small groups (max 1:6), real backcountry field venues, AdventureMark accredited.
