About

The Elms is open to the public most days of the year except Christmas day. The entrance fee includes a guided tour by our talented storytellers who bring life to its rich history and tell about the people who have lived here. A visit to The Elms | Te Papa is a chance for a walk back in time to experience a unique part of New Zealand's history. The new TECT Heritage Garden & Pavilion tell of the meeting of cultures on this site and includes the food plants of early settlers and Māori. Situated on the northern tip of the Te Papa peninsula, the current site and surrounding land was part of a large and densely populated Māori settlement for many centuries. The Church Mission Society was invited to establish a mission in the 1830s.
