Bannockburn Sluicings (Time: 2 hours)
If it’s a vivid slice of history you’re interested in, along with stunning views of the Cromwell basin and Bannockburn vineyards, then this track is a must. Walking around the former Bannockburn gold field you’ll see remains of dams, water races, tunnels, caves, stone walls and channels as well as the impressive towering cliff faces that remain as a result of sluicing for gold.
Start this walk from the signposted car park on Felton Road, 1.5km from the Bannockburn Bridge.
Follow the track up through the workings to Stewart Town, along the ridgeline and back down to the car park. Information panels around the track explain some of the history, and there are a number of tracks that branch off the main track offering more opportunities to explore.
