Wine tasting

With its Mediterranean climate and (mostly) clear sunny days, the Nelson Tasman area is famous as New Zealand’s aromatic wine capital. For fans of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Rose and Viognier varieties a visit to one or more of the region’s 28 cellar doors is a must – and perfect for a rainy day.

Nelson Tasman’s Craft Beer Brewing Trail

Beer is central to the local culture of the Nelson Tasman region; dating back to the first New Zealand settlements in the 1840s. Craft breweries of all sizes stretch the length of the region and make a perfect excuse for a half or full-day sampling tour. Meet the colourful and eccentric characters who make up the region’s brewers – many outlets welcome visitors for tours, sampling at the bar, enjoying a meal or takeaway sales. Whether you prefer an icy pilsner or cask-pulled ale, you’ll find it here in the craft brewing capital of New Zealand.

World of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum

Find out how a small show promoting a local art gallery grew into the largest single arts and fashion event in the Southern Hemisphere with a visit to the World of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum. Gain a sneak peak ‘backstage’ into the extensive wardrobe and art collection that resides behind closed doors at the museum. For car fanatics, everything from the old to the new is on display with over 140 classic cars at any one time available to view.

Meet the artist

Nelson Tasman has a quirky, arty culture, and has one of the largest numbers of working artists and galleries in the country. Experience their unique artwork first-hand with a tour from Wine, Art and Wilderness – choose from a private one-on-one viewing to personal tutoring in artistic pursuits as varied as painting, ceramics and sculpture. Or, grab yourself a local Arts Trail map and design your own tour.

Get muddy with an outdoor adventure

No matter the weather, Cable Bay Adventure Park is a great place to go for some muddy outdoor fun. Choose to hit the tracks on a 4 wheel motorbike adventure, or try a more sedate horse trek. Or, try something new and have a ride on the Skywire and soar like a bird for 3km above the sea and river valleys.

Indoor Entertainment

Scale the walls at Vertical Limits Climbing Centre, challenge yourself to some ten pin bowling at Action Entertainment Centre, ride the wave pool and lazy river at the Richmond Aquatic Centre, bounce your way around the trampolines at Flip Out or play some indoor mini golf at Road Hogs.

Explore Nelson Tasman’s Heritage

Visit the region’s historical homes, peruse the interactive and informative displays at the Nelson Provincial Museum, or grab an umbrella and check out historical South Street.

Pamper Yourself

What better excuse for some relaxation and rejuvenation than a rainy day? Nelson Tasman has an array of day spa’s and massage centres to choose from. We recommend Kimi Ora Eco Resort in Kaiteriteri, where you’ll not only be treated to day spa services, but also indoor heated swimming pools, spa pools, sauna and steam room.
