New Zealand's premier rowing venue, Lake Karapiro, is a man-made lake on the Waikato River just six kilometres south east of Cambridge.

Lake Karapiro is a man-made lake on the Waikato River and is renowned as a world-class rowing venue. A number of water sports events are held at the lake including yachting, powerboating, canoeing and water skiing. The centre of the action is Lake Karapiro Domain where camping and lodge facilities are available.

There are several walking tracks nearby including the internationally significant Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari(opens in new window), which features a 16 metre high forest canopy viewing tower, a 600 year old rata and flourishing native species.

Cyclists and mountain bikers come here to try out the Te Awa Cycle Trail(opens in new window) and the nearby Waikato River Trails. Nighttime kayaking glowworm tours are also on offer.

Karapiro is situated 6km from Cambridge, where you'll find shops, restaurants, cafes and fuel.
