Tick off New Zealand's most stunning multi-day walks, one adventure at a time.

New Zealand's eleven Great Walks are premier hiking tracks that pass through some of the country’s most spectacular scenery and national parks. The tracks are well-formed and easy to follow, taking between three to five days to complete. A moderate level of fitness, basic outdoor skills, and sturdy hiking boots are essential.

The Great Walks season typically runs from October to April, although some tracks can be tackled during the colder months of May to September by those with advanced mountaineering skills. Basic huts and campsites are provided but must be booked in advance due to limited capacity. Most people choose to organise their trip independently, but guided options are also available.

Planning tips

Tackling a Great Walk requires detailed planning, including the following:

  1. Pick a walk that suits your fitness and interests. Most walks are best done from October to April. Some are open year-round but may require advanced skills in winter.
  2. Book early because huts and campsites fill up fast, especially in peak season. Bookings are open until 30 June 2026 and can be made through the Department of Conservation (DOC)(opens in new window) website.
  3. Pack suitable clothing, food, and equipment.
  4. Weather can change quickly, so be prepared. Check the weather forecast and track conditions on the DOC website.
  5. Follow track guidelines and respect nature. Leave no trace.
