About
Waitaki Museum is housed in the former Athenaeum building. The Museum’s new exhibitions tell local natural and cultural stories that are beautifully presented in state-of-the-art displays. The upper floor of the Museum has recently reopened with an exhibition dedicated to local 20th century history. A highlight for many visitors is Kā Puipuiaki O Korotuaheka. This exhibition showcases a significant collection of taoka (treasures), dating back to the earliest days of Māori settlement. The Waitaha Taoka | Stewart Willetts Family Collection includes thousands of stone tools, as well as adornment and items for fishing and hunting: all of them found at the mouth of the Waitaki River.
