Big River Track Itinerary

Surrounding the historic West Coast town of Reefton, the rugged and mountainous Victoria Conservation Park covers 209,000 hectares. This remote landscape is rich in gold mining heritage, native forest, and backcountry adventure.

Important update

The route between Big River and the Inangahua Valley is no longer maintained.

  • The section between Golden Lead Battery and Progress Water Race (via Deep Creek) is closed
  • The Inangahua River swing bridge has been removed
  • Through-tracking from Big River to Inangahua is not possible

Visitors should plan return or alternative routes.

Recommended itinerary

Option 1: Return walk (Waiuta ↔ Big River)

DAY 1

Waiuta to Big River Hut

Travel through historic gold mining country as you follow an old pack track. Highlights include:

  • Big River South Mine
  • St George Mine
  • Historic stamping battery

Arrive at the former Big River mining township, where remnants of the gold rush era remain scattered across the landscape. Stay overnight at Big River Hut.

DAY 2

Big River Hut to Waiuta

Return the same way, taking time to explore more of the historic relics and forest surroundings you may have missed on the way in.

Option 2: Reefton → Big River return

Access Big River from the Reefton side via the Big River 4WD road.

  • Walk or bike sections of the route
  • Explore historic sites around Big River
  • Return the same way

Option 3: Reefton → Waiuta (combined route)

Create a point-to-point experience by combining:

  • Reefton–Big River 4WD road
  • Waiuta to Big River Track

This option suits experienced visitors with transport arranged at both ends.

Getting there:

  • Waiuta access: From Greymouth follow SH7, turn onto Waiuta Road, then follow Blackwater Road to Waiuta.
  • Reefton access: Follow SH7 Southeast from Reefton to Soldier's Road.

  • Weather in this region can change rapidly—check forecasts before setting out
  • Tracks may be rough, muddy, and remote
  • There is limited signage beyond maintained sections
  • Carry appropriate gear and allow extra time
