Heading out of the township of Takaka you will drive alongside the torquoise blue coast towards Wainui, the north entrance of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track. Follow the signs through Pohara and 20kms along is the carpark off to the right.
From the Wainui Falls carpark there is awonderful short walk up to the base of Wainui Falls. You begin by passing through farmland and then continue on a well kept track with easy grade paths through the forest.
There is a small amout of simple rock hopping and tree roots to navigate. It’s about an hour loop and the path weaves alongside the river, between Ferns, Rata’s and Nikau Palms.
Along the way there is a swing bridge to cross that towers above the water below. With a mesh bottom and guide ropes to hold onto this is quite an adventurous crossing and a lot of fun if you're up for it!
And then you come upon the base of the falls. They fall at quite a heavy and impressive rate and the scene is usually misted in fine refreshing spray
There are some safe and lovely swimming holes beside the track to have dip and cool off on a hot day!
There are a few benches to sit and enjoy the views over the beginning of the Abel Tasman National Park.
