Lake Waikaremoana Track

A refuge amongst prehistoric rainforest with access to some of New Zealand’s most iconic birds, this Great Walk around the shoreline of Lake Waikaremoana.

Lake Waikaremoana, one of the Great Walks, provides an opportunity to enjoy the rainforest and native birdlife of Te Urewera. Enjoy incredible views from Panekire Bluff and a side trip to the amazing Korokoro Falls.

The mountains and hills are covered in lush vegetation, forming a protective green cloak over the ridges and valleys. The area hosts more than 650 types of native plants and an abundance of native birds live in the forest. Among them are the kereru (wood pigeon), kaka (forest parrot), kakariki (parakeet), North Island robin, New Zealand falcon and rifleman, and at night, morepork (forest owl) and North Island brown kiwi.

The 46km hiking track takes 3-4 days and follows the shore of the lake most of the way. Accommodation is available at Great Walks huts and campsites. Bookings are required.
