Rakiura Track - Stewart Island

Visit Stewart Island - the land of the glowing skies. Where the length of walking track on the island far exceeds the length of road!

Human influence has been minimal on Stewart Island, and the Rakiura track around the coast from Halfmoon Bay is an experience which takes you through areas of stunning natural beauty, in virtually untouched land.

The forest towering above, a closeness to the sea and the ambience of the surroundings make for a great three day walk.

The Rakiura Track is a 29 km tramping track, suitable for anyone with moderate fitness, and provides a good introduction to the scenery of Stewart Island.

The empty curve of long sandy beaches and remote coastline lets you know that you have the place to yourself. The track has been upgraded in places as you head over to Paterson Inlet, delving into the virgin forest of ancient giants.

You might even be lucky enough to see a kiwi. Normally they are nocturnal but on Stewart Island they have thrown away their watches and feed in daylight when it suits them.

If you are spending more time in Halfmoon Bay, there are shorter walking options available.
