A easy walk along the most spectacular coastline in the region, passing through farmland and forest.

Walking the track

From the carpark at the end of Wharariki Road, it is a 20 to 30-minute walk to Wharariki Beach, with its rugged rocks and scenery. The best time to visit is at low tide, when you can walk the length of the beach past enormous sand dunes and cross the small creek. If you follow the markers you will eventually reach Cape Farewell – look out for seals in the sand and rock pools. You can continue onto Farewell Spit (adding another few hours to your hike) or return to the carpark.

Useful information

The big seas at this wild and remote beach mean it's best suited to exploring on foot rather than swimming .
