Motuara Island is a bird sanctuary, a predator free safe haven for many rare native species. Early morning bird song greets you as you step ashore onto a tidy track which gradually climbs to a spectacular vantage point built above the forest canopy.

Refreshments at passengers cost if they choose to lunch in the Sounds
You will leave Picton at 8am with Cougar Line, Marlborough Sounds' premier water transport company, and once arriving you will have approx. 2 hours to explore the Island independently, allowing you to enjoy the bird life and scenery at your own pace. The bird life on Motuara Island is relatively unafraid of humans, so this is a great trip for birdwatching. Rare species such as the South Island Saddleback and Bush Robin live on the Island and small blue penguins also nest in boxes alongside the track. The Early Bird Eco Cruise returns to Picton at 1:00pm or you have the option to add, at no extra cost, a stop off at Ship Cove or at one of the café/restaurants in the Queen Charlotte Sounds for a lovely lunch - contact us to find out more.
