Te Anau is your gateway to Fiordland, home to world-famous fjords, mountains, and walking tracks.

Te Anau is a picturesque town located on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau in the Southland region of the South Island. It sits at the edge of Fiordland National Park, one of the country’s most spectacular wilderness areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And it’s the starting point for Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound and for three Great Walks:

•    Milford Track
•    Kepler Track
•    Routeburn Track

Other attractions include the Te Anau Glowworm Caves and the Hike Fiordland Passport(opens in new window), a selection of fantastic day walks.

For more information about Te Anau, along with recommendations for accommodation and restaurant, visit SouthlandNZ(opens in new window).

Te Anau is easily accessible by road and is about a two-hour drive from Queenstown or Invercargill. Regular coach services operate from major South Island hubs, and while Te Anau doesn’t have its own airport, Queenstown Airport is the closest for domestic and international flights.
