The pohutukawas are in bloom on Auckland’s eastern Pohutukawa Coast and we visited Omana Regional Park to check them out. Omana is only 40 minutes from Auckland City and is a coastal farm park on the sheltered Tamaki Strait. This is a great one for the kids as there are some easy walks, farm animals and a great playground. The beach is sheltered and very tidal so swimming is limited to an hour or so either side of high tide but, at low tide, there is a large expanse of mudflats to explore and pools to poke around in. And lots of bird life!
The new playground is great - with a Maori theme it has a whare, carved bird pou and sharks and a fantastic wilderness area for adventures. Omana has picnic tables and wood barbeques for you to use. You can book out specific sites (contact Auckland Council to do so) or find your own perfect picnicking spot under a shady tree.
We stayed in the campground which is a lovely spot on the clifftop overlooking Tamaki Strait and Waiheke Island, a fine place to enjoy a cocktail. It is a large campsite (but usually quiet) with lots of shelter, picnic tables, freshwater taps and longdrop toilets.
Omana is only 1km from the small seaside village of Maraetai so an easy jaunt to get an ice cream after a day at the beach or to pick up takeaways to enjoy back at the park.
