Lake Taupo trout fishing has been world famous since Zane Grey first visited and wrote about his fishing adventures in Tales of the Angler's Eldorado in the 1920's.
Turangi is known as the 'Trout Fishing Capital of New Zealand' and is a great base for fly fishing. Appropriately, the town is home to the Tongariro National Trout Centre hatchery, museum and freshwater aquarium. Running through the town, the Tongariro River is the largest and most important spawning river in the Taupo District.
The Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo Rivers, which feed Lake Taupo, provide world class year-round fishing. Each year an estimate is made of how many fish run the river to spawn and this gives an indication of the health of the fishery (currently in extremely robust health!). The Tongariro River is well known all over the world for the fishing quality it provides. Ever since Zane Grey fished the river and promoted it in his book, the river has gained a reputation as a world-class river to fish for prime rainbow and brown trout.
Other popular rivers to fish are the Hinemaia River at Hatepe, the Tauranga-Taupo River and the Waitahanui River, famed for its 'picket fence' along the river mouth as it enters Lake Taupo. These streams and tributaries all combine to provide trout with an outstanding spawning habitat and protected areas for rearing young fish. A special feature of the Taupo District is that the lower parts of the main rivers are open to fishing all year round.
Taupo fly fishing guides provide anglers with fabulous wilderness fishing in the surrounding rivers and streams amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in New Zelaand. Taupo and Turangi are home to internationally recognised fishing lodges which provide resident fly fishing guides and specialise in catering fo rthe overseas angler.
However if you decide to give it a go on your own, don't forget to buy a special Taupo fishing license. These can be purchased from i-SITE Visitor Information Centres in Taupo and Turangi, or from any fishing or outdoor shop in the region. Fish & Game licenses which are valid throughout the rest of New Zealand cannot be used in the Taupo District.
To find the best spots and hear the hot tips drop into any fishing or outdoor shop and caht ot some of the local characters. While you are there appropriate gear can be hired or purchased.
And remember, trout cannot be bought or sold commercially within New Zealand, however many local restaurants will happily prepare and serve privately caught fish.
