Gibbston near Queenstown is a picturesque wine region. Vineyards are wedged between rugged slate mountains and the rocky gorge of the Kawarau River. The high altitude of the area means that the grapes are exposed to cold winters and hot summers, with large temperature differences between day and night. Excellent wines that have already won many international awards are produced under these conditions. Over 70% of the grapes grown are Pinot Noir. There is also Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. A wine tour is a must for wine lovers. Gibbston is also known for its tasty cheese. Different types of cow and sheep milk are offered, and some of them go very well with a Pinot Noir.
